The Thatch

Looking for random locations in Ireland for some relaxing getaways away from the noise of Dublin – I usually look through the map and have found County Offaly, Birr to seem pretty much in the middle (of no where) and nothing seemed so perfect as we usually stretch ourselves towards the edges of Ireland.

We couldn’t have aimed for a better bulls-eye at the central area of Ireland, for the lovely place called The Thatch!
The Thatch was recommended to us by the local and lovely lady at the Minnocks Country Home B&B who welcomed us with 3 beautiful Rough Collie’s and a unique country feeling, if you’re ever looking for the country experience – that’s your place.

The Thatch has been operating for over 300 years, let it sink in – 3 centuries!
Thatch stands for the unique roof above it, Thatching is a craft of building a roof with with dry vegetation such as straw or reed.

Let’s get to the mouth drooling part!

Warm Asparagus Spears topped with Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese and served with a Pineapple and Red Pepper Salsa

A fantastic starter the mix of salsa with the asparagus spears and buffalo mozzarella cheese tastes magnificent!
Presentation was wonderful and we loved the combination of flavors in a single dish.

Atlantic Seafood Chowder

Creamy and hearty, what else do you need? bread! deadly soda bread with butter to lick our fingers off with.
Can’t go wrong here – you should definitely go with this chowder to warm you up on these cold winter days.

For every main dish, we got to choose two sides, and they were all typical Irish home-made food that tasted beautifully!

Grilled Salmon

The Corn, Pepper and Lime Fritter underneath is full of good flavors and sits very well with the Salmon – a creative dish that is so tasty with the Chive Sauce made us think this is a contrasting dish full of comfort and we didn’t regret with the choice here!

Sirlon Steak

Prime Irish Sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce was tender and juicy, cooked beautifully on a big platter we each enjoyed it.
Myself and Gill love our steaks and the appetite we had for this one was just fine! even with all the food on the table we finished the huge chunk sitting on the plate.

Tia Maria and Mint Chocolate Chip Cheesecake

Dios Mio!(my god) that cheesecake was deadly, one of our favorite cakes in the world is cheesecake and this one had an explosive combination of flavors.
I’d be happy to have this cake on my deathbed.

Conclusions:

It’s not your day-to-day restaurant or bar. The Thatch serves great quality of food and is also the go-to place for locals to meet up for a drink at night.
The warm and nice owner that welcomed us in and the service from waitresses was lovely, checking up on us to make sure everything is ok with our food often and that nothing’s missing.
I genuinely believe that this is another one of Ireland’s hidden gems sitting right below Birr in County Offaly.
And seeing as Offaly has been ranked on Independent.ie second to last of most visited counties in Ireland, we can guarantee there’s more to do there(next post coming right up!)

Do not miss the opportunity to visit The Thatch if you’re in Co. Offaly for a brilliant meal and drinks.
